Mental Health and Addiction Resources for Families

Having a child with a mental health or substance use disorder is excruciating for parents. While our children struggle with symptoms of anxiety, depression, mania, or psychosis, we are often forced to watch helplessly as their conditions deteriorate because we can’t get them the help they need. As caregivers, we may feel like we have no control over what happens to our kids and that we have no voice. We may be battling feelings of helplessness and isolation ourselves. Self-care and support are vital tools for helping us cope with the effects of a loved one’s mental illness or addiction. The following organizations can help point you in the right direction. NAMI and Nar-Anon’s support groups were invaluable in my own search for understanding, peace, and forgiveness amid my daughter’s mental health and addiction crisis.
